Fidelity Files for a Bitcoin ETF

Fidelity (AUM $4.9T) has filed with the SEC to manage a Bitcoin ETF, under the name "Wise Origin Bitcoin Trust". This is one of many recent filings, but as a heavyweight in the traditional asset management industry, Fidelity's entry puts more pressure on the SEC to finally approve a Bitcoin ETF (after 5+ years of reviewing & rejecting various applications).

  • With more and more proxy vehicles for BTC exposure in public markets, it becomes even more difficult for the SEC to deny a proper ETF
  • GBTC has been the most popular proxy to date, however it has recently been experiencing a negative premium to spot, perhaps in part due to competition from new BTC-exposure vehicles such as recently-approved Canadian ETFs and MSTR.
  • It's widely speculated that if the SEC approves one ETF, they will likely approve several, in order to avoid being a "king maker" in the bitcoin-ETF space.
